First Nations Health Authority has begun offering dental coverage through the Pacific Blue Cross. As of September 16th, 2019, Pacific Blue Cross now covers and provides access to many dental services and procedures for registered First Nations people.
Inuit and First Nations populations have almost twice the amount of dental disease and oral health problems as other Canadian residents, for a multitude of reasons including lack of access to nutritious food, higher smoking rates, and fewer regular dental visits amongst First Nations populations. Lack of access to affordable dental services is a major issue that has a massive negative impact on the health of First Nations people throughout British Columbia and the rest of Canada. Pacific Blue Cross’s partnership with the First Nations Health Authority is an attempt to make medical and dental services more available to underserved First Nations communities.
Who is Eligible?
Pacific Blue Cross dental coverage is available to any First Nations person with a Canadian Status number, provided that person is also a resident of British Columbia with an active Medical Services Plan and is not covered by any other benefits from self-government or land claims agreements. Infants under one year old are also covered if one parent holds a Canadian Status number.
