Tips to Reduce Bad Breath

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Proper brushing and flossing removes trapped food and plaque, both of which contribute to bad breath. Use mouthwash as well. Swishing with mouthwash helps kill odour-causing bacteria and dislodges trapped food bits from between teeth and other hard-to-reach areas.

Don’t Forget Your Tongue!

The surface of your tongue is often a hotbed of bad-breath bacteria, but it’s easy to forget to clean your tongue since it’s just not a part of the body that we think about too often. Use your toothbrush to brush your tongue gently or get a tongue scraper or a toothbrush with a special tongue cleaner built in.

 

Skip the Breath Mints

Don’t bother with breath mints, they’re doing more harm than good. They are almost always chock-full of sugar that will actually give you worse breath in the long run, although it may mask the odour for a few minutes. Instead, opt for sugarless gum, which will freshen your breath without wearing down your teeth or producing more bacteria.

 

Don’t Skip Meals

Have you ever noticed your breath get worse on an empty stomach?  This is because when you haven’t eaten in a while, stomach acids build up and release odours that cause bad breath. Make sure that you are eating regularly and you will likely notice a marked improvement in your breath.

 

Avoid Dry Mouth

Some people simply don’t produce much saliva or they may experience dry mouth as a symptom of some medications, which causes unpleasant breath. To help stimulate saliva flow, drink lots of water, snack on fresh, crunchy fruits and vegetables (like apples and carrots), and consider using a humidifier in your home if the air is dry.

 

Visit the Dentist Regularly

The best thing you can do for your breath is to go to the dentist for regular cleanings. Your dentist will remove plaque and clean your whole mouth thoroughly, getting rid of bacteria, gingivitis, and trapped food bits that all contribute to halitosis.
