Common Causes of Toothache

There are a number of things that can cause tooth pain. Here are a few of the most common culprits:

  • Cavity
  • Infected tooth nerve
  • Cracked tooth
  • Grinding
  • Abscess
  • Wisdom Teeth erupting

Try These to Remedy a Toothache

Swish with Saltwater

If you have a toothache, it’s important to keep your mouth very clean in case of infection. Swish a few times a day with saltwater (especially right after you’ve eaten) to keep the area clean and promote healing.

Take an Anti-Inflammatory

Over the counter anti-inflammatories (headache medications that include ibuprofen, not acetaminophen) can help to reduce tooth pain because it is often caused by inflammation. It is a good idea to take an anti-inflammatory for some relief, but if the toothache persists you should see your dentist to address the source of the problem.

Try Clove Oil

Cloves contain a natural anesthetic called eugenol which can cause a numbing sensation and provide some relief from toothache pain. Simply swab the painful area with clove oil for quick pain relief.

Call Your Dentist

If the toothache persists, call a dentist and make an appointment. Your dentist will be able to tell you exactly what’s causing the toothache and can let you know the best way to address it. At Tsawwassen Family Dental, we are always happy to take new patients and help you on your journey to better oral health.
